1. Why are you offering a free download?

CollabNet’s goal in offering a free download is to stimulate broad adoption of SourceForge Enterprise Edition (SFEE). SFEE has proven itself as a collaborative software development platform with deployments ranging up to tens of thousands of users. Many of our customers started to use SFEE for small projects and ended up rolling it out to their entire development teams.

We’ve heard from a number of our users that they would like an easy way to evaluate the software before making a commitment to broad deployment. We thought that was a great idea, and decided to make a download version available to anyone who wanted to evaluate SFEE. Our belief is that you’ll see significant value by deploying it within your workgroup, and also consider it for broader use within your development organization.

2. How long can I use the software?

As long as you want. There are no time limitations.

3. Are there any limitations in using the software in a production environment?

None. You’re free to use it in production or for evaluation.

4. What if I have more than 15 users?

We offer attractively priced promotional upgrades for up to 50 users. Other licensing options are available for any number of users. Click here for more information about SFEE or send us an email for pricing and ordering information.

5. How do I get support?

We offer a Community Support Site at no charge. The community site provides a range of valuable information, including sample projects, multimedia educational content, a Getting Started Guide, and other extensions and tools. There’s also a discussion forum where you can interact with other SourceForge users.

6. Why do you use VMware (R)?

We selected VMware to ensure a smooth installation and deployment process. Deploying SFEE requires installing a database and an application server, and configuring connectivity with a source code management system (SCM) such as Subversion or CVS. This installation and configuration takes time and resources that not all users have.

Also, packaging SFEE in a self-contained virtual machine reduces platform and version compatibility issues, and enables you to try SFEE on any platform supported by the VMware Player (Linux(R) and Microsoft Windows.) So we simplified the installation and configuration process by pre-installing SFEE, Linux, JBossTM, Subversion, and CVS, and packaging it up in a VMware image. It’s a large download, but it’s fairly straightforward to install and run. And, it’s a known configuration that we’ve tested and verified.

7. Is the software open source?

No, we’re not distributing this download edition under an open source license.

8. Who else uses CollabNet’s Solutions and SourceForge Enterprise Edition?

More than 1.2 million users rely on CollabNet. SFEE is in use by a significant number of companies, many of which are large and well known. Installations range in size from tens of users to tens of thousands of users. Click here to see a list of CollabNet customers.

9. What’s the different between the download version and what you currently offer to enterprise customers?

The download can be used for up to 15 users at no charge. The product capabilities are the same as the commercial version of SFEE — it includes all of the features and capabilities as the version that’s currently used by our enterprise customers.
